CHILDHOOD
July 6th, 1907 Magdalena Carmen Frieda Calderon is born in the in Coyoacán, Mexico. Frida grew up in the family’s home where she was born. At the age of 6, she contracted polio. The polio caused her to be bedridden for around nine months. While she did recover from the illness by exercising her foot and leg which was highly encouraged by her father, she limped when she walked because the disease had permanently damaged her right foot and leg. As a child Frida changed her name from the German spelling Frieda to a more Mexican sounding Frida.
